A man feels himself to be a stranger in his own life but does nothing to change it. The film was inspired by Albert Camus’ novel The Stranger in which the central character sees through the absurdity of life and draws the correct conclusion. Dierickx’s style focuses on a compelling, well-defined narrative and a psychological approach to multifaceted characters. Greco and Scholten’s dance idiom draws on the non-psychological human body, which acquires new meaning in an abstract world. This contrapuntal relationship underlies their joint film.
“Collaborating with Pieter C. Scholten and Emio Greco produced a challenging and inspiring synergy with these two renowned choreographers. It was a healthy journey of discovery. And it was only possible because Point Taken is one of those rare things, an island in the world of film where the artists involved work in the knowledge that everything’s possible and everything’s allowed. In other words, we were able to work within our own framework rather than an externally imposed one.”
Arno Dierickx
“The most valuable thing for us was that in a really short period of time (the pressure cooker principle) we could experience all the ins and outs of making a professional film. It was our good fortune to find a director who was could engage both with the film’s subject (The Stranger by Albert Camus) and an area of expression previously unfamiliar to him: the language of the body. The decision to operate in parallel on our own domains (each to their own trade) while also allowing them to connect (artistic parasitism) gave us a structure through which we could exploit both the abstraction of film and the anecdotal nature of the human body. Both our own and Arno’s curiosity about film and how the body can be part of it and relate to it has only increased, and both parties see the benefits of building further on this experience and exploring deeper into this ‘in between space’.”
